The Powassan Voodoos have acquired local product Cayden Kowal from the Espanola Paper Kings for a development fee, the club announced Friday.

“I am very excited to get started with a great organization that I grew up watching, I’m ready to have a great season with a team that has the core to make a run deep into the playoffs,” stated Kowal.

The North Bay product was a key part of the North Bay U18 AAA Trappers team that captured the Great North U18 title in 2022-23.

Last season Kowal played 39 games with the Paper Kings where he netted six goals and 10 assists for 16 points.

Peter Goulet, Voodoos coach, says the team was interested in Kowal last year when he started the year in Georgetown of the OJHL and then moved to Espanola later in the fall.

Kowal was given permission by Espanola to attend Voodoo's prospects camp last weekend where he excelled with Team Green.

“We were allowed to speak with Cayden, from there things fell into place and we were able to make the trade, to get Cayden closer to home,” added Goulet.

“We are excited to have Cayden join our team as he is a big power forward with a year’s experience under his belt. With him coming back home to live and play in the area he grew up, he should be ready for a breakout season.”

Kowal will join the rest of his teammates at Voodoos main camp on August 22 in Powassan.
