Veteran storyteller Dave Dale has joined the BayToday team.

BayToday strengthened its reporting team again today, adding veteran writer Dave Dale, a multi-media journalist with more than three decades of story-telling experience in the North Bay region.

Dale will be concentrating on stories from the vibrant communities surrounding the city, with emphasis on those along the Highway 17 and 63 corridor and Nipissing First Nation.

Born in Toronto, his family moved often with his father’s work tied to major construction projects in Ontario, Manitoba, Pennsylvania and Ohio. He calls Capreol, ON his hometown after living there for Grades 7 through Grade 11 – the longest they stayed in one spot.

In 1986, he moved to North Bay for Canadore College’s Print Journalism program. One of his first jobs as a reporter was at the North Bay Independent weekly in 1989, followed by two years at the Kapuskasing Northern Times and one year in Orillia with Thomson Newspapers.

Before joining The Nugget for 18 years starting in August 2000, he had a seven-year stint as the editor of Anishinabek News for the Union of Ontario Indians.

Dale, 55, has lived in Corbeil on Highway 17 for almost 20 years, often referring to his home as the ‘hacienda.’ He’s been involved in the community with minor sports as a baseball coach and hockey executive. Dale has also organized fundraisers for a variety of causes, most recently with a series of comedy shows benefiting local cancer, dementia, and hospice services.

He is the associate publisher and managing editor of A Bit of the Bay Magazine, a quarterly print product that focuses on the history and nostalgia of the city. It recently celebrated its first anniversary with a 10th edition.

Dale has one son, Dylan, 22, born in North Bay and raised in East Ferris. A graduate of Ferris Glen Elementary, Silver Birches senior elementary, and West Ferris Secondary School, he now lives in Ottawa.
