Two people were rescued off Lake Nipissing on Monday afternoon when their truck plunged into Lake Nipissing.  The incident occurred less than 500 meters from the shoreline by North Bay's Sewage Treatment Plant.

Bartlett's Towing, which rescues vehicles from cars to snowmbobiles across Ontario, says that the ice may not be thick enough for them to pull the vehicle out of the frozen waters of Lake Nipissing.

"It depends on the depth of the ice," said Larry Bartlett.

"Fourteen inches of ice is not enough for us to pull it out, we have a few more cold days and we hope that will help build up to 18 inches and then we will be comfortable to pull it out," added Bartlett who says the vehicle is a full-size pickup.

Bartlett warns sledders or motorists to still be very cautious when going out on area lakes, even with the frigid temperatures.

"There are some good places but whole lakes are not safe, especially near flowing water," he said.

Bartlett says over the years he has pulled 6 vehicles from the same location.

He adds the thin ice in that location is due the water flow coming out from the sewage treatment plant.
