John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade and MPP for Nipissing announced a new dam for Tilden Lake at a news conference this morning. Submitted.

John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, was joined today by Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade and MPP for Nipissing, to announce a $6 million replacement of the Tilden Lake Dam.

"The safety of the public and the protection of our communities is our number one priority," said Yakabuski. "We are taking immediate action to address aging waterway infrastructure, allowing the province to maintain safe water levels to lower risks to Ontarians, their property, and the natural environment."

Tilden Lake Dam, built in 1961, is a ministry-owned and operated dam north of North Bay. It maintains water levels in Tilden Lake.

"There is no question we are dealing with changing climate increasing magnitudes of flooding we've seen over the last number of years,"  Yakabuski told CKAT News. "The dam is reaching an age where it needs to be replaced but it's also a dam that needed to be redesigned for today's operations as well. There are some changes going to be made in the new dam to make it more effective, and more efficient with regards to water management."

The Tilden Lake Dam revitalization project will see the construction of a new concrete dam that will help ensure the proper functioning of the infrastructure.

"We're investing in infrastructure that has real benefits for the people of Northern Ontario." said "Fedeli.

The MNRF is responsible for 398 dams in the province.

"None of them are flood control dams, they cannot deal with a flood. Once we get to flood levels our dams are not capable of holding water back because we simply don't have the reservoir capacity, but they are water management dams that under regular and normal circumstances allow us to exercise a lot more control."
