A dead crow found on Hwy. 632 S in Rosseau has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). This is the third bird to test positive for the virus in 2006 in the area served by the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit; the other positive birds were found near the town of Parry Sound and in Sturgeon Falls. Further surveillance will be carried out to determine whether mosquitoes in the immediate vicinity of the positive birds are carrying the virus.
Mosquitoes acquire West Nile Virus by feeding on infected birds. The infected mosquito then passes the virus to humans through a bite.
