Students at Widdifield Secondary School got a leg up on the competition Wednesday as they participated in the school’s 6th Annual Certification Day.

All students in grades 10 to 12 participated in one of forty-one certification workshops that offer students opportunity to acquire sector-recognized certifications in an effort to support their future postsecondary education and employment goals.

All workshops were led by industry professionals at no expense to students and included: Child Development and a glimpse into what it is like to have a career in the health field with Dr. Mary Grise, Dance with North Bay native Mindy Conto, a highly sought after dancer and choreographer based in Toronto, Pottery with renowned artist Pat Stamp, Cake decorating with Stacey Caverly and Plumbing with Mike Paterson of Paterson M D Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning.

Paterson says there is a shortage in the trades and certification days and workshops like this offer students an introduction to the trades.

"The kids were great," says artist Pat Stamp of the event.

"I was really impressed with their determination to master the potter's wheel in one day..(an impossible task) but the results speak for themselves."

Grade 12 student Michelle Chapin, who runs her own small business ChapesCakes, looked forward to broadening her skills and in turn increase business with her workshop.
