The North Bay Blooms committee will be holding their "Awesome Sunflower Contest" at Northgate Square, 1:00 p.m. Center Court on Saturday, September 27.

The committee handed out over 1,000 Giant Russian Sunflower seeds to primary school students in the spring to grow for the contest and some of the plants have done amazingly well this summer in spite of or possibly because of, the wet weather.

The flowers will be judged in two age categories:

1 - 0 to 7 years of age
2 - 8 to 14 years of age.

The committee has and number of categories including tallest, broadest, most unique and
best overall sunflower.

Blooms Chair Chris Mayne says some of the flowers measured so far are reaching over nine feet tall and still growing.
