Tracy Roy went into his bedroom at 2150 Trout Lake Road and much to his surprise, he smelled something funny.
“I was in my back bedroom and I smelled some smoke,” said Roy.
“I picked up a blanket to throw it in the bathtub or throw it outside and then the whole mattress just exploded. The flames went up and almost hit the roof.”
The lone tenant, who has lived at the location for more than 20 years, then closed the bedroom door, put on some clothes and called 9-1-1. Within 5 to 7 minutes fire crews were on the scene.
Roy, who is a tenant and does not own the Trout Lake Road home near the bypass, is thankful he got out okay.
Roy admits he is not a smoker. However, he says that blanket, where the fire started, was on his couch and he had visitors earlier.
He believes some ashes from one of their cigarettes fell onto the quilt which was thrown onto his bed where the fire started.
Damage was extensive to the home as firefighters were seen throwing a scorched mattress out the front window.
Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders was impressed at how swiftly his crews contained the blaze.
"Firefighters did a terrific job entering the home and successfully extinguishing the fire," stated Saunders in a release.
"Unfortunately, the residence suffered significant damage and the residents will be displaced from the home."
It was a busy morning as three hours earlier, firefighters contained a porch fire on Olive Street.
"Fire crews from Station 1 were on scene within 4 minutes and very quickly were able to extinguish the fire thus saving the home from significant damage," said Saunders.
