Survey on business impacts of homelessness, crime, addictions and mental health

The North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce says the costly situation for the business community has 'created much frustration as they are dealing with increased incidents of trespassing, disturbances to business operations, theft and destruction of property'

The North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce is inviting the leaders of local businesses and organizations to participate in an "important survey designed to gather information on the impact of homelessness, crime, addictions, and mental health issues on businesses and organizations within our community."

The survey states, "Your feedback is invaluable in helping us understand the challenges you face and in developing effective strategies to address these pressing issues."

Chamber President Donna Backer says the organization she leads "acknowledges that homelessness, crime, addictions, and mental health are present ongoing challenges in our community. These issues require comprehensive solutions and continued attention from all sectors. We recognize the complexity of these issues and are committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders to seek effective strategies and support.

"Ontario's small and medium-sized businesses have been placed on the front lines of these issues they are not equipped to deal with.  As a result, this has created much frustration with the business community as they are dealing with increased incidents of trespassing, disturbances to business operations, theft, and destruction of property. These results inevitably become a cost to businesses (new windows, security systems, increased insurance premiums, etc). "  

The insights gained will be shared with local, municipal, and federal government authorities to inform policy decisions and resource allocation, the survey says. "This information will help us create a comprehensive picture of the current situation in North Bay & District and identify areas where these issues are most prevalent for our members."

Backer tells BayToday, "Chamber members have indeed expressed concerns about these urgent social issues. We regularly engage with our members to understand their perspectives, which are essential in shaping our advocacy efforts. Based on their feedback, there is frustration over the constant need to pivot around these issues without seeing significant improvement. Overall, members are fed up and are looking for change. 

"Businesses increasingly require support to effectively address these complex challenges, which impact not only the broader community but also the operational environment and well-being of the businesses themselves. From safety concerns to workforce stability and customer relations, businesses face multifaceted challenges that need comprehensive and collaborative solutions. Supporting businesses in navigating these issues not only enhances their resilience but also fosters a more inclusive and thriving community environment overall."

Backer says the Chamber recognizes these concerns are not unique to the region but are systemic issues across Ontario and Canada and "both the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce are also championing these causes, aiming to raise awareness and prompt action from the levels of government that benefits everyone. 

She adds, "It is crucial for stakeholders to recognize and address the specific needs of businesses as integral partners in finding sustainable solutions to these pressing societal challenges."
