David Washington and Sharon Fung have been named the 2016 Kiwanis Co-Citizens of the Year at a reception at the Legion Branch 23 this afternoon.

Washington and Fung, established the North Bay North Stars hockey program back in 2005; the first Special Needs Hockey program in Northern Ontario.

“David and I were very surprised by this award and very honoured to be chosen as recipients,” Fung told BayToday.ca late Thursday afternoon.

“We are so pleased with the the way the North Stars program has grown and with how the community has embraced the team and all it’s members.  It’s been a lot of hard work to keep it running but the benefits far outweigh the workload,” admitted Fung.

Fung says the North Stars hockey program has become a labour of love.

“To be recognized for doing something we really enjoy is a bonus,” said Fung

“We have to thank our players, their families and our amazing team of coaches who make it so easy for us to come back each year and Lisa Hurtubise who nominated us for this, it’s truly an honour.”

Washington and Fung will receive their awards at the Kiwanis Citizen of the Year event on May 12th.
