Snow depth is approximately half of what it was at this time last year, but it's not likely to stay that way after a winter storm rolls through this weekend.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority measures snow depth and water content as part of its Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.

“The average snow depth for all sites is 26.9 cm (79% normal) and average water equivalence is 49 mm (78% normal),” said Kurtis Romanchuk NBMCA’s Water Resources Engineer. “Precipitation amounts recorded at the North Bay Airport are slightly below average so far this winter (December and January), and the snowpack shows a similar trend” he added.

Expect that to change as significant snowfall amounts are expected Saturday through Sunday morning.

Environment Canada is calling for snow and blowing snow over the weekend with plenty of accumulation.

An approaching low pressure system will bring snowfall to northeastern and eastern Ontario starting Saturday morning. Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 cm are expected. Strong winds up to 50 km/h will create areas of local blowing snow on Saturday afternoon.

The snow will ease to light flurries Sunday morning.
