Local elementary school will be closed Wednesday due to what officials say was a small dishwasher fire which occurred at Mother St. Bride School’s child care centre around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

"When the fire was discovered, child care staff immediately activated the fire alarm and alerted North Bay Fire & Emergency Services," the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board stated in a release late Tuesday night.

School Board officials say no children were in the building at the time the small fire broke out.

"A restoration crew is onsite to address the odour lingering from the smoke," the release continued.

"Air scrubbers and portable air purifiers have been set up in the school to operate overnight and tomorrow to help reduce the odour.

"As a precaution, Mother St. Bride School and the child care centre will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, March 19, to allow time for the clean-up and the odour to dissipate."

Child care staff are currently reaching out to all affected child care parents.

"We will be monitoring the situation throughout the day tomorrow and expect the odour to dissipate by the end of day," the release continued.

Officials anticipate that the school will reopen Thursday, March 20, and they will continue to provide updates to the Mother St. Bride School community through Edsby and Facebook.
