The Nipissing University Student Union joined forces with the Nipissing University Lakers Crew to hit it out of the park for Cystic Fibrosis on Saturday.

Ten teams signed-up for a day-long Co-Ed Slo-Pitch Tournament in advance of the university’s Shinerama event in September.

“The tournament is made up of teams from the community, as well as student teams. The goal is to raise money and awareness for Shinerama, which is our campaign to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Canada,” said Xander Winter Vice-President Communications Nipissing University Student Union.

There is no cure for this inherited disorder, but through research, CF patients are beginning to live longer lives.

Cystic Fibrosis Canada identifies CF as “the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. CF causes various effects on the body, but mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. The degree of CF severity differs from person to person, however, the persistence and ongoing infection in the lungs, with the destruction of lungs and loss of lung function, will eventually lead to death in the majority of people with CF.”

It estimates that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada will have the disease.

“This year marks the 21st Shinerama campaign for Nipissing University. It started at Wilfred Laurier University, and it has spread across Canada. Our Nipissing Shine Day is September 1st. We’ll be all around the community washing cars, bagging and carrying groceries at various grocery stores. So watch out for us, we’ll be wearing bright yellow t-shirts and we should be pretty easy to spot,” said Winter.

“We’re hoping to eventually make CF stand for Cure Found for Cystic Fibrosis.”

Organizers hope the tournament will raise close to $2,000. The overall goal for this year’s campaign is $15,000. Last year students raised just over $12,000.
