Nipissing University’s Alumni Association will honour Kimberly Blacker with the Alumni Achievement Award Friday at the annual Alumni Awards and Convocation dinner.
Blacker, currently teaching at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall in North Bay, holds two degrees from Nipissing; she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in English in 1995 and a Bachelor of Education degree in 1996.
The Alumni Achievement Award is presented annually to an alumnus who demonstrates leadership abilities and community involvement and who displays significant accomplishment in their chosen profession. In 2000, Blacker initiated a volunteering program named Cold Noses, Warm Hearts, in which students volunteered their time to work at the North Bay and District Humane Society. Blacker has also worked extensively on developing curriculum to teach students at the elementary and secondary school levels about Shaken Baby Syndrome. She piloted the Shaken Baby Syndrome initiative at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall. The secondary school curriculum she developed is currently being assessed by the Ministry of Education and she has taught the elementary curriculum to schools in the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board. Blacker has also been involved in toy drives for Nipissing Transition House.
“The alumni association is very proud of Kimberly Blacker and her accomplishments. She is a wonderful educator who truly inspires her students to learn and to become involved in their community through volunteerism,” said Brendan Wilson, Alumni Association president. “It is an honour to present her with this award.”
