Sandy Martin is truly proud of her daughter today, not because she got straight A's in school or because she medaled at the latest dance competition, no Martin is beaming with pride because her daughter did gave up something she treasured in order to help children with cancer feel better.
Sarah Martin, 10, cut off 12 inches of her hair Friday and donated it to the Angel Hair For Kids.
“Her hair is going to make a nice wig for some child,” notes mom.
“Sarah started growing her hair out in grade one as she needed to let her bangs grow for dance … she is a competitive dancer with Renee's Dance Connection.”
Sandy goes on to explain that in grade 2 Sarah decided that she would grow her hair out and donate it to a cancer foundation for a wig for a child. The next year it was time for a cut, but they quicly realized that Sarah's hair would then be too short for any dance hair styles so the decision was made to let her hair grow another year.
“In grade 4 again we had a trim, but took too much off so we waited until grade 5.”
“She wouldn't get her hair cut until after all her competitions and her year end dance recital. After her recital last Sunday she made the comment "okay mom it is time to make that appointment."
So on Friday they paid a visit to hairdresser of 11 years Joanne on Fisher Street and cut it all off.
“Joanne has been cutting Sarah's hair since she was an infant and I think she found it hard to take the scissors and cut off her beautiful long hair,” notes Martin.
She also says that Sarah witnessed the toll cancer can take on a body because she watched a fellow student at Tweedsmuir Public School who was battling cancer lost all her hair.
“Also a friend of hers Aunt had breast cancer and went through the chemo/radiation treatments and she saw first hand what it was like to lose your hair,” says Martin.
“The Aunt made numerous comments to Sarah that her hair would make a beautiful wig and that she would love to have a wig out of Sarah's hair. After seeing these two people she decided that yes she wanted to donate her hair.”
