It was not considered a real bad year for Shadflies but the mouthless bugs inspired the berth of Shad Man, a new local super hero.

See that story: A new local super hero in the Bay?

Now the well-known insect phenomenon has inspired a local entrepreneur to create Shad Fly T-Shirts.

Michael Phillips, the owner of Scratch E.Wear, has made Shadfly T’s in the past, but he believes now is the time to re-introduce the Shad Fly inspired T-Shirt.

“The Shadfly shirt was first printed in 2004 and was sold at the North Bay Mall at Scratch E. Wear until 2005,” stated Phillips.

Phillips says he used Social Media to help with the new version.

“People helped choose the font and the location of ‘Ontario, Canada,’” he said.

“Everyone had a chance to have their say in the final design.”

As for Shad Man, Phillips would love to team up with the new local super hero.

“I love the shad fly super hero, love to do some shirts with his logo on them,” he said.

Phillips believes it makes sense to celebrate the Shad Fly since we are one of the few communities that get them every summer.

“They are little insects who amaze and repel us,” he said.

“They show our lake is healthy and are attracted to light, which brings them into our city.”
