ENDED Severe thunderstorm warning in effect

Expect strong winds gusts up to 90 km/h and nickel to toonie size hail  There is also the risk that a tornado may occur this afternoon and early this evening. Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop and track through the region today

Update: Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.

This severe thunderstorm is located near Kioshkokwi Lake, moving northeast at 45 km/h.

Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and nickel size hail.

Locations impacted include Mattawa, Amable du Fond Provincial Park, Eau Claire, Kiosk, Kioshkokwi Lake and Rankin.

Local conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain says Environment Canada.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect Monday afternoon into Monday evening for:

  • North Bay - Powassan - Mattawa
  • Huntsville - Baysville
  • Deep River - Whitney - Eastern Algonquin Park 
  • Témiscaming, Que. and area 

Environment Canada reports conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Hazards:

  • Wind gusts up to 100 km/h.
  • Toonie-sized hail.
  • Local rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 mm.

Timing:

  • This afternoon into this evening.

Thunderstorm development is expected south and east of Georgian Bay. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe quickly while moving east over the area. Wind gusts of 100 km/h, toonie-sized hail and rainfall amounts approaching 50 mm are all possible.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn't a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.
