School lockdown due to distressed student

The Near North District School Board has confirmed that there was a lockdown incident this morning at W.J. Fricker public school.  

“There was a hold and secure lockdown due to a distressed student,” stated Near North District School Board Chair David Thompson Wednesday afternoon.  

Thompson says incident took about 30 minutes when all students and teachers were asked to stay in their respective classrooms until the incident was dealt with.  

“It was an isolated incident and procedures were followed and proper actions taken for all students to stay safe,” added Thompson. 

North Bay Police were called to the scene. 

"This morning at WJ Fricker School a 13-year-old male was arrested and charged with Possessing a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (2 counts) and Assault with a Weapon (1 count) after an incident where he brandished a knife in front of staff members," stated Sgt. Paul Brewer in an email.   

"No details are available on the description of the knife.  As a precaution, a hold and secure was briefly put in place by school staff, and lifted a shortly after."

No more details are being released relating to the incident but Thompson and Police confirm that no one was injured.
