Further information about the 2004-2005 school year can be found in the following news release issued this morning by the board:
___________________________________________

Today approximately 13,000 students are returning to the 45 schools in the Near North District School Board. The students will be greeted by 800 teachers, 190 educational assistants as well as a diverse support staff.

As the new school year begins the equivalent of 13 elementary teachers will be working in elementary schools as part of the Board's literacy intervention program. Just over 7 teachers have been assigned among 15 schools to assist with primary class size and an additional 7.75 teachers have been assigned to support our distant schools. In addition, three new child development counsellors will join our current compliment of 12 counsellors. Two pilot programs, intended to intervene and assist with students facing suspensions, along with a Native liaison assignment are included.

Staff have been busy preparing schools for the arrival of students. Some computer labs have been upgraded, renovations and maintenance has been completed and a significant number of staff have been involved in training and professional development activities.

The Near North District School Board is pleased that further activities will take place to support literacy and numeracy for its students. Later literacy and school wide literacy programs are in place at both the elementary and secondary levels. As well our Student Pathways program will grow as we emphasize the importance of a wide variety of career destinations and the appropriate programs and courses required to succeed.

A major initiative in the Board involves the teaching of Character Education. After an initial year of engaging staff and students in a broad understanding of Character Education, schools and administration will be involved in more practical demonstrations of character building. Students will be educated in this regard while staff will continue to model appropriate virtues. Together we trust that ìcharacter will build hope.î

The Directorís theme for the year will continue to be Focused on Success as a reminder of our commitment to student success and our effort to align our work to this end.

The Near North District School Board would welcome inquiries about the district. Please contact the school in your community or neighbourhood. Also the Boardís website found at Near North District School Board
