Rota on cabinet shuffle; Poilievre visit

'What we saw is a shift and brought in new people with a lot of experience and I think that is going to work out fairly well'

Anthony Rota speaks during Thursday’s media event at Woodlands Public School in North Bay.

Anthony Rota does not believe it is a bad thing seeing Justin Trudeau making a significant cabinet shuffle on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister made a massive overhaul to his cabinet two years into his latest mandate, with about three-quarters of cabinet portfolios switching hands.

"The changes in cabinet happen every so often, and it is good to renew those changes and renew cabinet," Rota, who is the Speaker of the House, during a media conference at Woodlands Public School.

One of those ministers was Marco Mendicino, the public safety minister, who was scheduled to visit North Bay for a number of stops on Monday afternoon. Mendicino's visit was cancelled Monday morning.

"What we saw is a shift and brought in new people with a lot of experience and I think that is going to work out fairly well. It is something that happens at the halfway mark, the government has been in place for two years. It is not uncommon to have a shuffle after the halfway mark, with a little bit of a renewal and push a new agenda."

The cabinet shuffle comes at the same time the conservatives have jumped into a double-digit lead in a recent poll.

Meantime, Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will be making a stop in North Bay on Friday, July 28 to host an “Axe the Tax Rally," as part of a northern tour that sees him making stops in Timmins and Sudbury as well this week.  That event will take place at the Best Western at 6 p.m.

Rota does not have any issue with that.

"Anytime an MP comes to North Bay or Nipissing-Timiskaming they are more than welcome. It brings attention to the area, we look forward to having Mr. Poilievre here," said Rota.

"We have had ministers here, we have had MP's from all parties and I welcome them all to this area because it gives the riding some extra exposure to the rest of the country."

Rota would not comment on Pollievre's agenda which likely includes an attack on the Liberal's stance on the carbon tax.

"All parties have the right to put their policies forward and I look forward to seeing what both sides have to offer."
