Anthony Rota MP for Nipissing-Timiskaming has been appointed Assistant Deputy Speaker and Assistant Deputy Chair of Committees of the Whole of the House of Commons, says the MP in a news release.

Rota was appointed by the Honourable Geoff  Regan, newly elected Speaker of the House following the opening of Parliament.

The Assistant Deputy Speaker and Assistant Deputy Chair of Committees of the Whole support the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker in the Chamber as presiding officers. In the absence of the Deputy Speaker, they take the Chair when the House sits as a Committee of the Whole.

“I am honoured to be appointed to this position,” said Rota. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House of Commons in a respectful and courteous manner.  The House of Commons is the centre of our democracy and I want to cultivate decorum, productivity and civility in the 42nd session of Parliament.”

Rota previously served as Chair of the National Liberal Caucus and sat on several parliamentary committees.
