Colleen says she was walking to work along the Lakeshore overpass around 7:30 this morning when she came upon a giant pile of snow right in the middle of the sidewalk located on the well-used bridge.
“It was about my height or higher (5'5'') and at the top of the overpass on the other side there was a similar huge pile,” she stated.
“When I first noticed it, I laughed at how absurd it was, then briefly contemplated backtracking to go on the other side of the overpass,” she continued.
“However, I was unsure if the other side would be the same so I decided to climb over it in the middle and slide down the other side. The road was not an option because it involved climbing over another large snowbank into oncoming traffic, without the possibility of climbing back over on the other side.”
Colleen, who asked BayToday.ca not to use her last name, has a car but likes to walk to her place of work.
“As someone who chooses to walk to work, I find it frustrating because the roads are perfectly clear, but the sidewalks never are,” noted Colleen.
“This certainly does not encourage people to walk. I am glad that I do not have a physical disability nor a stroller otherwise, it would be impossible to get anywhere vis-à-vis walking.”
Mike Anthony, Chair of Infrastructure & Operations, was made aware of the snow piles and took immediate action and notified staff.
City officials followed up on Anthony's request and told Anthony that the snow piles were removed by 8 a.m.
“We had massive snow and staff did their best to battle it,” noted Anthony.
More snow removal is expected to take place this evening on the east side of Lakeshore Drive from the North Bay Mall to John Street.
