During the month of April, the North Bay Police Service took part in a Provincial initiative aimed at removing unwanted firearms from our community.

During April residents of Callander and North Bay contacted the police service and made arrangements to have their unwanted firearms, ammunition or weapons turned over to the police for safe disposal.

“In Canada, we allow firearms laws that allow people to possess and use firearms such as hunting or target shooting,” noted North Bay Police Chief Shawn Devine.

A number of people took advantage of this amnesty and police have been able to safely secure;

  • 37 Non-restricted firearms
  • 9 restricted firearms (handguns)
  • 1 replica firearm
  • 1 pellet gun
  • Several hundred rounds of ammunition

All of this items will be disposed of by the North Bay Police Service.

“This amnesty initiative has allowed people who no longer wanted their firearms an avenue to dispose of them in a proper and safe manner without facing criminal consequences for their possession,” Devine said.

“It is part of our police services ongoing efforts to work with our community to increase safety and security.”
