The North Bay Police Service is conducting an ongoing investigation into a sudden death that occurred at a residence on Premier Road in North Bay early on Saturday, according to a statement issued Monday morning.

Although NBPS is not releasing the name of the deceased or any additional details about the case, multiple sources confirm the deceased is local lawyer Geoff Laplante, 56.

"Geoff Laplante was a beloved member of the Nipissing Law Association. In his long career, he helped many people who faced serious troubles. He carried out this difficult work with skill and good humour. He should be remembered for this," says Greg DuCharme, the Nipissing Law Association's past president.

Local law firm Perrin Ahmad LLP also announced via social media it would lower flags to half-staff in honour of Laplante, who was born and raised in North Bay and attended Scollard Hall.  He also attended Queen’s University where he studied law and was called to the Bar in 1987.

Police say at approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 8, members of the NBPS responded to a call from Emergency Medical Services personnel at a residence on Premier Road regarding an unresponsive male. Lifesaving measures were taken but were unsuccessful and the male was deemed deceased.

The North Bay Police Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Police currently do not have reason to believe that there is a threat to public safety.
