Local Conservatives are congratulating Pierre Poilievre as Nipissing-Timiskaming supporters helped the Carleton MP to a dominant first-ballot victory for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada late Saturday.
“We would like to thank all candidates for their efforts and we congratulate Pierre Poilievre as the new leader,” says Landon Trudel, President of the Nipissing-
Timiskaming Conservative Association.

The association reports that 11,698 Northern Ontario party members cast ballots and Poilievre received 8,624 of those votes. He also won 330 of 338 ridings across Canada, including most of the Quebec ridings that seemingly supported Jean Charest. Poilievre achieved nearly 70 per cent support mark from party members.
Conservative leadership results from Nipissing—Timiskaming:
- Pierre Poilievere 1,032 votes
- Leslyn Lewis 123 votes
- Roman Baber 121 votes
- Jean Charest 102 votes
- Scott Aitchison 21 votes
A staunch critic of the governance of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals, the populist Poilievre also spoke in the House of Commons and beyond about his support for elements of the February convoy protest in Ottawa.

"This leadership race more than doubled Nipissing-Timiskaming membership to over 1,400 members, making it the second largest membership in Northern Ontario," says Trudel. " It's a sign of discontent with the Trudeau Liberals and enthusiasm for Pierre as evidenced by his packed rally in North Bay.
"The party is united behind Pierre!"
And: First the win, now the work: What Pierre Poilievre has to do next as new Tory leader
With the House of Commons resuming next week Poilievre will hit the ground running as the Leader of the Official Opposition. Poilievre will address the national Conservative caucus Monday in the nation's capital and will meet with the Tory members of Parliament and senators. He must decide who his critics will be and will have plenty of allies to choose from as 62 out of the other 118 Conservative MPs supported his bid.
