Peninsula Road garage burns to the ground (PHOTOS)

'Water supply is a struggle even though we are on the lake we still have to use our tankers to shuttle water and it is a stubborn fire'

A large fire has destroyed a garage connected to a home along the eastern end of Peninsula Road on Trout Lake this afternoon.

Firefighters got the call around 4:30 p.m. from the two residents of the home, and they were able to get out safely along with their two pets.

Fire fighting efforts were hampered by a lack of fire hydrants in the area as fire crews had to draw water from Trout Lake to contain the fire to the garage.

“Obviously we are a long way from the city so this is a long run for us and when the fire takes hold it has a long time to grow and mature and by the time we finally get out there it is a pretty mature fire and it is a struggle for us,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders.

“Water supply is a struggle even though we are on the lake we still have to use our tankers to shuttle water and it is a stubborn fire.”

Four pumper trucks and 15 firefighters were on scene battling the blaze.  Saunders believes by 6 p.m. the fire was under control and the crews kept the garage, which was burnt to the ground, from spreading to the home.

“We are struggling to keep it from the main part of the home right now and I think we have successfully done that,” said Saunders.

“The guys are hot, the guys are working hard today.”

Saunders says it is too early to determine the cause of the fire.

Traffic along the fire scene was cut down to one lane along the narrow stretch of road which runs along the shore of Trout Lake.
