OPP started its summer traffic campaign today, ending on July 4.
"Warmer weather and longer days mean more people will be getting out and enjoying outdoor activities on our highways, waterways, trails, and Provincial Parks," says Constable Jennifer Smith.
This upcoming weekend the OPP will be focussing on aggressive driving along with other "Big Four" offences which include: alcohol/drug - impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and lack of seat belt use.
The OPP will also be enforcing laws around safety equipment. During this time, officers will be seen giving thumbs up to boaters/paddlers, off-roaders, motorcyclists and vehicle occupants they spot wearing lifejackets/personal floatation devices, helmets, and seatbelts.
Only one of the 10 boaters/paddlers who have died so far this year was wearing a lifejacket or PFD. The potential for a lifejacket/PFD to save the life of someone who falls overboard or whose vessel capsizes is enormous, yet only 15 per cent of boaters/paddlers killed on OPP-patrolled waterways in the last 10 years were wearing them.
Helmets are a critical piece of equipment for off-roaders and motorcyclists and are required by law. Last year, half of the 23 off-roaders who died in collisions were not wearing a helmet. Motorcyclists should also wear protective clothing that is designed to reduce injuries in a collision and could save your life.
"The OPP urges all drivers and passengers to use their safety equipment and to make it a part of every trip," emphasizes Smith. "Making use of all these will go a long way in keeping you and your family safe during your planned activities this holiday - and you might even get a thumbs up from the OPP."
R.I.D.E. stops will be set up in various locations and there is absolutely no tolerance for drinking and driving or being impaired by drugs.
