OPP: Call from off-duty officer led to arrest of driver

Driver received a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days

The Ontario Provincial Police reports a traffic complaint in Astorville led to the driver being charged with driving while impaired by drug. 

On July 4, 2024, at approximately 5 a.m., the North Bay OPP received a call from an off-duty police officer reporting a driving complaint involving a possible impaired driver on South Shore Road. OPP attended the scene and observed a grey car pulled onto the side of the road.  

Through investigation, police determined that the driver had been consuming an intoxicating substance. The driver was arrested and transported to the North Bay OPP Detachment.

The Driver, Eric Champagne, 34, of Astorville is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation Impaired - blood drug concentration

The accused was released and scheduled to appear before the North Bay Ontario Court of Justice on July 16, 2024. They were issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
