OHL Prospect Profile - Thomason tough to play against

'I would say I'm a pretty solid two-way defender'

Defenceman Ayden Thomason.

Ayden Thomason is a hard-working defenceman for the North Bay U16 AAA Trappers.

"I would say I'm a pretty solid two-way defender. I’m very effective in the D zone, I like the battles in the corners, very hard worker in the corners and I usually win those battles, said Thomason, whose father Terry played NCAA hockey in the U.S.

Thomason believes he can be an effective defenceman who can create offence on the power play.

"I’d say I'm pretty good at lateral movement making the guys move on the PK and I can get pucks through holes, said the 5'10", 165-pound left-hand shot defenceman.

Thomason, who is an affiliate defenceman with the NOJHL's Powassan Voodoos, says he worked hard during the long hockey-less days of the pandemic.

"I knew if I was just gonna sit around guys were gonna pass me and I wanted to stay at the top of my game so I got a couple of buddies from the team and about four times a week we would go run hills and then once COVID-19 started opening up a bit I went to workout with my trainer and went about five times a week," admitted Thomason.

Thomason, who prides himself on being an 'A' student at St Joseph-Scollard Hall, can also be a reliable shutdown defender.

Some top scorers in the Great North Midget League say Thomason is a defenceman that is tough to play against.

“I just hate losing battles I don't want to be the guy that loses the battle then the other team goes and scores the game-winning goal, I don't wanna be that guy on the ice," admits Thomason.

Thomason is hoping that hard work and dedication will pay off when the 2022 OHL Priority Selection takes place…

"It would mean a lot to me, one of my top goals. I just think it would be cool to be a guy from a small town getting drafted."
