At 6'1" and 175 pounds, Marshall McCharles is a valuable power forward on the North Bay U16 AAA Trappers.
The North Bay product is not afraid to pay the price to get to loose pucks first and it's paying off thanks to his 8 goals and 6 assists for 14 points in 17 games playing against older players in the Great North Midget League.
"I'm physical, I am a playmaker, I'm not afraid to go in the corners and get physical, get dirty I have a nice shot and I can pass that puck amazingly."
Since a young age, McCharles has always had tremendous vision. That has not changed in his OHL draft year.
"I was a quarterback so I like to see the ice in front of me and pass the puck nice and have a good surrounding of where everyone is."
And OHL scouts are taking notice of the grade 10 St. Joseph-Scollard Hall student.
"McCharles has been an interesting player to watch this year," noted on OHL scout.
"He has shown consistent development throughout the season and it appears he has started to find himself as a player. He plays a physical game, and has very powerful shot.
"He is the type of player that works hard in the corners and isn't afraid to land a big hit when the opportunity comes available. He plays a well rounded game and can be equally effective at either end the ice. He is part of a strong Trappers team that has the potential to have multiple players selected for this year's OHL draft this coming April."
McCharles took steps back away from AAA hockey in peewee but has made bigger strides in the past two years.
"I worked with Logan Baker, at the YMCA I worked with my brother doing dryland, he's right now with Football North so he helped me throughout the summer and I did some running and I went to AA that was a good year."
McCharles has also been a Swiss Army knife with his U16 Trappers team; having the flexibility of playing forward and defence when called upon.
"The team needs me; I have their back and when we had a defenceman suspended during the Kitchener Blueline Tournament they needed me in that position and I came through and I did it for the team.
"I can play both positions, I can play offense, defense, I’m a hard worker, I can play mostly any position except goalie. I'm a hard worker and I can shoot the puck nice I can pass the puck nice."
McCharles who also possesses a good shot, says he plays his best in big moments
"I'm calm under pressure, I'm not fazed, I played pitcher, I played quarterback, and I'm really calm under pressure."
He's hoping for a big moment again when the OHL Priority Selection takes place.
