'When I get the puck on my stick I try not to stick handle too much and kind of just get a quick shot off'

Anthony Boyes is a skilled forward with a tremendous release…

The 6 foot, 170 pound winger is a big part of the offence in the North Bay U16 AAA Trappers netting 4 goals and 8 assists for 12 points through 15 games in the Great North Midget League this season.

'Over the summer I've been shooting pucks and trying to get it off a quick release and when I get the puck on my stick I try not to stick handle too much and kind of just get a quick shot off, not overly a powerful shot but I just try to get it off my stick as quick as I can," he said.

OHL hockey analyst and former NHLer Greg Theberge, who is from Boyes' hometown of Sundridge, is impressed with his hometown "Boyes" game.

"I think watching Anthony play, he reads the play well he moves the puck at the right time with great saucer passes, gets himself in the clear and loves to support the puck side and he takes the checks to make the play," noted the former Washington Capitals defender.

Boyes says he has worked hard as a bigger player on becoming a better skater.

"Over the summer I've been working on my legs on the bike and outdoors and indoors and doing lots of workouts and I feel like my edges are very strong I'm able to do quick turns and lose the defender to be able to set up plays," said Boyes, whose older brother Ethan plays defence for the U18 AAA Trappers.

Boyes hopes all that hard work pays off as he hopes to be selected in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.

"I’ve been playing hockey since I was 6 years old and I'm really fortunate to be playing AAA and being coached by such an amazing coach and it'd be really fortunate to be drafted in the OHL it’d be a dream come true," he said.
