Davis Anello is another young U16 AAA Trappers defenceman hoping to make a mark in the very important 2022 OHL Priority Selection that takes place this spring.
The 5'10", 175-pound defender who turned 16 in early January, is a reliable defenceman on his squad who has a great shot from the point.
"I think I have really good vision especially in the offensive zone I have a quick release and I can get pucks through the middle. I can find the open spots and get good shots," said the St. Joseph-Scollard Hall student.
Being a big Boston Bruins fan, Anello models his game after Charlie MacAvoy.
"I think we have a similar style play, he's a bit taller than me but we're both bigger - like chunkier- defense," he said.
Anello says he took the pandemic as a time to get both bigger and stronger.
"During COVID it was hard to get to the gym's, most of them were closed there were some periods where they were open but I was fortunate enough to have a home gym so I got lots of work in there and whenever the ice was available even outdoor rinks it was nice to get out and just put the work in," he said.
Anello, who is an affiliate player with the French River Rapids of the NOJHL, is getting looks from OHL scouts.
"He’s a big, left shot defender, uses his size and strength to win 50/50 battles," said one OHL scout about Anello.
The North Bay product also takes pride in his physical game
"When I see these bigger guys coming down from when I'm behind the net with the puck I see them coming down trying to hit me I know I'm good cause I got the boards there and I'm hard to knock off my feet," admitted Anello.
He hopes to continue to put in the work during the U16 AAA Trappers stretch run in February and March.
"I think I'm a decent player and in the next few years potentially playing in the OHL I’m a leader I can really get the team hyped up for the games, make sure they're doing everything right I'm a big leader in practice and I work hard," he said.
