North Bay YMCA staying closed until at least September

'That may be disappointing for many it is also the time of year when we traditionally we do not have that many members who return to our buildings because of the fabulous summer season in northeastern Ontario'

The YMCA in North Bay is not opening anytime soon.

Helen Francis, the President and CEO of the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario representing the facilities in both North Bay and Sudbury, went to YouTube to announce that the two facilities will not open again this summer.

"Happily as you know we have moved into Stage 3 of the provinces re-opening plan and technically we are able to open up our facilities," said Francis.

"However, we have always prioritized the safety and well being of our staff and volunteers, members, participants, and community as a whole and we are not going to compromise that."

The YMCA will continue to operate its daycare and summer programs plus a partnership with Canadore has helped the facility operate a unique DISCO hub sharing technology with seniors as a type of mobile hub.

However, members of the Titans swim team and members who use the gym fitness facilities will have to find other options.

"We have made the decision that while our staff teams are focused on running day camps at our facilities that we will not consider reopening the facilities fully to our members until such times that those camps have completed," Francis continued in her address.

Francis believes putting safety first and not opening during a traditionally quiet time makes sense.

"So we are targeting a September opening date," she said.

"While I know that may be disappointing for many it is also the time of year when we traditionally we do not have that many members who return to our buildings because of the fabulous summer season in northeastern Ontario so it also makes sense for us to anticipate that we will have more members willing and ready to return to our doors."
