The first-ever Black Excellence Banquet will take place on February 7 at 5 p.m. at NUSU Student Center and will honour and recognize the contributions of Dr. Saint Firmin Monestime, the first elected Black Canadian mayor, who served the town of Mattawa from 1964 to 1965 and again from 1970 to 1977.
"The Black Excellence Banquet aims to celebrate not only Dr. Monestime's groundbreaking achievements but also the significant contributions of Black Canadians in various fields throughout history," says a news release. "This event is part of a broader initiative to promote awareness, education, and appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and accomplishments of the Black community."
The event is hosted by Nipissing Arts and Culture, Nipissing University Student Union, Les Compagnons des francs loisirs, and Fédération des femmes canadiennes françaises du Nord-Est.
Attendees can look forward to "a night filled with live music by Akeem Oh, free cocktail food, and an ambiance of celebration and reflection. There will also be an open donation opportunity to support a BIPOC bursary, which aims to provide financial assistance to students from diverse backgrounds pursuing their education.
"This banquet will serve as a platform for education, cultural exchange, and fostering a greater appreciation for diversity in our region."
