Another celebration for the start of construction for the new North Bay Rotary Splash Pad.

Officials gathered at the site only days before the official construction of the pad will begin later this week.

The 6,000 square foot project will be done in two phases. Phase I with a price tag of $500,000. That phase will include infrastructure and site preparation along with the installation of the splash pad equipment along with washroom facilities and landscaping.

Phase II, which is estimated to be $150,000, will include sun shelters, picnic tables, benches and the completion of landscaping.

Maria Maille, is the President of the Rotary Club of Nipissing.  She says Rotary has raised about $438,500 toward the project in over a dozen years of fundraising.

“Our club has been fundraising for different projects that were supposed to happen at the waterfront but the splash pad itself has been about 12 years so over that course in time there have been lots of fundraising initiatives,” said Maille.

“The last big one that we worked on really hard was the Lobsterfest.”

She is thrilled to see this project which will be for everyone from two to 102, getting closer to reality.

"To have a community project in our own community where children of all ages can come and play, and be safe and enjoy what is available to them is really important to us so we celebrate all the things we do around the world but this is something we get to celebrate on the home front," she said.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli was also on hand to announce a provincial contribution to the project.

“This project is something the community has been working toward for some time, and it’s exciting that our government is helping to bring it to fruition, for all to enjoy for years to come,” said Fedeli.

The city of North Bay also chipped in with $80,8500 for infrastructure and site preparation.
