North Bay author Heather Stemp has released a pair of new books for middle-grade readers, Amelia and Me, and Under Amelia’s Wings.
The two books are a series about Amelia Earhart.
Stemp’s family is originally from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, where her aunt and uncle ran the airstrip. Amelia Earhart once landed on the airstrip and met Heather’s relatives.
The first book, Amelia and Me is based on the real girlhood of Heather Stemp’s aunt Ginny in 1930. There are archival photos of Amelia Earhart and her plane along with interesting historical details woven throughout the book.
The second book Under Amelia’s Wing takes place in 1936 and Ginny has moved to Indiana to attend Perdue University where Amelia teaches. When her mentor disappears without a trace, Ginny must decide her own fate.
BayToday spoke with the author about the history of Amelia Earhart and her family’s interactions, having in previous years giving presentations to schools in North Bay, and beyond on Amelia.
