No plate, no insurance, that's a problem!

OPP conducted a vehicle stop where the vehicle had no front plate on Dokis Road, West Nipissing

When officers from the Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP saw a vehicle approach with no front plate on Dokis Road, West Nipissing last night they became suspicious.

They stopped it, and as a result of the investigation, a 58-year-old person, from Thornhill is charged with:

  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Operate unsafe vehicle
  • Fail to apply for permit on becoming owner
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance

The vehicle was towed at the expense of the driver.

The Highway Traffic Act makes it an offence to use a number plate upon a vehicle other than a number plate authorized for use on that vehicle. The fine is not less than $100 and not more than $1,000.

You may also be interested to know that you don't own your plate. The Act states that "every number plate is the property of the Crown and shall be returned to the Ministry when required by the Ministry."

The driver, whose name and gender were not released, was issued a Provincial Summons and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on May 4, in Sudbury.
