With boating season comes a warning from the OPP...take safety seriously.
The OPP North Bay Marine Unit is patrolling local lakes daily looking for alcohol and drug-related infractions as well as safety equipment such as personal floatation devices (PFD's) and emergency kits.
Last weekend while conducting vessel checks on Lake Nosbonsing in Bonfield officers stopped two people in a canoe with a motor attached. There were no PFD's on board.
As a result, police charged a 21-year-old and a 19-year-old, both from North Bay with:
- fishing without a licence
- operating human-powered pleasure craft without prescribed vessel safety and navigation equipment on board;
- and operating non-human-powered pleasure craft without a personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board.
Police are also asking you to keep alcohol and cannabis out of the boat, drive sober, and bring required safety equipment with you.
