No injuries in Lakeshore hotel fire

'We got to it pretty quickly so we contained it to the bedding and the walls and ceiling'

Firefighters were called to the Travelodge hotel at 718 Lakeshore Drive this afternoon to fight a fire in a ground floor guest room.

There were no injuries.

The fire was reported just after 1 p.m. A hotel employee told BayToday that staff noticed thick smoke billowing down a hallway, but that the hotel was basically empty at the time and the room was occupied but no-one was present.

Captain Mark Linkie says the damage was pretty superficial.

"We got to it pretty quickly so we contained it to the bedding and the walls and ceiling. It's too early to speculate on a cause, he said. "We're going to have fire prevention coming in to assess the situation."

Damage was contained to a single room.

Linkie explained that no-one was in the room at the time.

"One of the first things we do is a primary search, and then a secondary search."

Linkie estimated response time at three to four minutes and added that the fire was knocked down about three minutes after they arrived on scene.

He explained that his crew used a new type of strategy.

"Our strategy for the fire was that we use a new type of technique called 'positive pressure attack' and so we pressurize the building, then we make a vent hole and push the fire out and away from anything that can be burned and outside the vent hole. So we make an interior attack very quickly and set up our positive pressure fans and get in there and get the job done."

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders was obviously pleased with the outcome as he shook hands and congratulated the men on their efforts.

Lakeshore was restricted to two lanes of traffic for a short period of time.
