No injuries as transport truck erupts in flames

North Bay firefighters make short work of truck fire behind FreshCo on Trout Lake Road

Around 12:30 this afternoon, a delivery truck went up in flames behind the FreshCo grocery store on 2555 Trout Lake Road. The tractor-trailer was unloading produce into the store’s delivery bay, and as the work was nearly done, the engine caught fire.

Nobody was injured.

“We’re not exactly sure how the fire started,” explained Platoon Chief Mike Souter. “Somehow it caught fire, and when we arrived, the flames were higher than the building.”  The building itself was not damaged.

“But the crew’s put it out pretty quick,” he added.

“It’s just the cleanup afterward” that can be difficult, the Platoon Chief noted, as there’s diesel from the truck on the asphalt below it.

The Platoon Chief has come across similar incidents before. “Whether it's maintenance or other issues, car fires do happen.”

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders says firefighters from Station 1 and Station 2 responded to the truck fire.

"The cab of a food delivery truck was completely on fire at the rear of the building.  Firefighters did an exceptional job getting the fire quickly under control, but a nearby home suffered some damaged siding from the heat generated by the blaze."

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The Health Unit was notified to make certain that everything was safe, as some smoke had migrated into the structure.  The grocery store was closed but expected to re-open later today.
