Nipissing University frosh week fun raises thousands of dollars for a good cause

'Before today I didn’t really know what CF was all about, but today really opened up my eyes and the generosity from everyone is just amazing' Karli McFadden Nipissing University frosh

Nipissing University frosh students spent the week building up to Saturday’s Shine Day to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

All day Saturday students washed vehicles and helped shoppers at area grocery stores carry out their groceries.

The students could be found at locations around North Bay and as far away as Sturgeon Falls and Powassan.

At the end of the day, they managed to collect just over $9,300 in donations.

Karli McFadden wrapped up her frosh week activities washing vehicles.

“We started at about 10 this morning and we’re going until 3. We’ve been pretty busy. We’re super grateful to everyone who made a donation to Cystic Fibrosis Canada,” said McFadden.

“Before today I didn’t really know what CF was all about, but today really opened up my eyes and the generosity from everyone is just amazing.”

Welland native Liz Mazzuca was one of about a dozen people joining McFadden at the Capitol Centre parking lot.

“It’s a big thing for me because I have family members that deal with similar issues, so fundraising for such a good cause is really meaningful and impactful for me. It shows that when we work together as a team, we can make good changes in our community,” said Mazzuca.

“And the people driving up are really cool and they’re really fun. They like to talk about things. They’re really nice.”

Peter Gallardi was happy to get his vehicle cleaned up.

“My car really needed a wash and I wanted to support my cousin’s daughter from down south who is here doing it.  And of course, the cause. The cause is a good one.”

Olivia Gallardi knows all about Shinerama, having spent two years as a frosh leader, as well as helping out during her own frosh week activities.

“It’s going great. This is usually one of the slower location’s but we’ve had a lot of people turn out, and a lot of support from the community. It’s nice to see everyone here to support a good cause.”

Over the summer, the Nipissing University Student Union held a charity baseball tournament raising just over $2,600 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
