Police say there are currently nine tractor-trailers that remain stuck on secondary roads in Huntsville, which is causing a delay in snow removal and hydro restoration efforts.
Also, OPP say responded to 10 minor collisions over the weekend due to snowy road conditions.
Between 5 p.m. November 29, and 6 a.m. December 2, officers responded to 10 accidents on Huntsville and Lake of Bays Twp. roadways. There were no injuries as a result of these minor collisions.
Houseys Rapids Road, Uffington Road, Southwood Road, Beiers Road, and the northbound ramp at Luigi Road remain closed.
OPP and emergency crews are actively working to clear snow on closed secondary roads off Highway 11 as they prepare for more snowfall in Huntsville.
Although Highway 11 has reopened, the OPP is asking drivers to slow down, stay alert and stay in control.
"Please be aware that the Huntsville area is expected to receive a significant snowfall between today and Friday. The OPP is urging the public to avoid non-essential travel during this time," says a release.
The OPP reminds motorists to ensure they are prepared for any situation by driving appropriately for the road and weather conditions. Remember to have an emergency kit in your vehicle, ensure sufficient fuel/battery level with reserve, and plan ahead by monitoring local media reports for road conditions and weather updates.
Motorists who find themselves stranded on roads are encouraged to remain calm, stay in their vehicle, and consider pooling vehicle resources until the OPP and other rescuers are able to reach their location.
If you are in a life-threatening situation, call 9-1-1. Please call the OPP non-emergency number, 1-888-310-1122 for all other matters.
Near-freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall are key factors in winter collisions.
Be prepared for winter driving:
- Conduct a maintenance check on your vehicle's equipment such as windshield wipers, washer fluid level, windshield defrost fan function, and tire condition for winter driving.
- Stock up your winter survival kit in your vehicle with items such as a blanket, candles, flashlight, extra prescription medication, fully charged cell phone, snacks, and any other supplies needed for unexpected winter travel problems.
- Stay alert to winter conditions which can change quickly, placing extra demands on your vehicle and driving skills. Drive according to the weather conditions, and your ability, and allow extra travel time.
- Check the Ministry of Transportation traveller website before heading out for roadway traffic, snowplow locations (Track My Plow), and surface conditions at www.ontario.ca/511.
