The monument was unveiled in 1961 in memory of Algonquin Regiment members who lost their lives during the World Wars. Following consultation with the Algonquin Regiment, the City of North Bay went ahead with the move. A concrete slab was poured in Memorial Park, on the Ferguson Street side of the cenotaph, where the Algonquin Regiment War Memorial now safely rests.

The municipality originally granted the land on which the monument rested for more than 60 years but the relocation of the 10,000-pound granite monument was an essential part of the ongoing reconfiguration of the traffic controls and lane-widening at the busy intersection of Algonquin Avenue-Jane Street-Front Street.
