New hospice now accepting palliative patients

Suites are bright, spacious and equipped with a daybed and comfortable recliner for family members who wish to stay close

Nipissing Serenity Hospice, on the heels of a grand opening this month, is now ready to accept palliative-patients.

“We are thrilled to announce our team and volunteers are ready and we have space available for patients,” says Elizabeth Evans, Executive Director. “Nipissing Serenity Hospice is a safe and welcoming, home-like space for palliative patients and their families, available at no cost.”

Anyone, at any age is eligible if they have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness with a life prognosis of less than three months.

Donors and partial funding, from the provincial government, have made it possible to offer the services free of charge.

A referral can be obtained by speak to your community care coordinator or doctor who can facilitate the referral through the Home & Community Care Branch of the North East Local Health Integration Network. 

"Suites are bright, spacious and equipped with a daybed and comfortable recliner for family members who wish to stay close. Large windows in each suite overlook Chippewa Creek and Laurier Woods for a quiet, peaceful and private ambiance. Wheelchairs are available and beds can easily be wheeled to the common areas such as the dining room, family room, sacred room or screened-in porch in the warmer weather," says a news release."Family and loved ones are encouraged to participate in patient care as much as they wish and will have access to the facility 24 hours a day."

Care is accessible 24 / 7 and those who are without a doctor will have one assigned. Each patient will have a personalized care plan, designed to meet their need and requests.

“Our patients may only have a few days left and we are ready to provide comfort in their final days. We will accommodate our patient’s wishes whether that means a therapeutic bath, a family dinner cooked by our chef or have a beloved pet staying in the patient suite”, says Lindsay Campbell, Care Coordinator at Nipissing Serenity Hospice. “We are committed to our patient's mind, body and spiritual care.”
