The North Bay Municipal Heritage Committee announced the winners of its Nostalgia Rewind photo and video contest.

The youth and adult winners of the annual contest, which celebrates North Bay’s heritage and recognizes local talent, were announced during the Regional Heritage Fair at the North Bay Museum.

The winners are:

Adult Category

  • Winner - Al Orlando
  • Runners Up – Amber McCarthy and Garrett Campbell

Youth Category

  • Co-Winners Ian Miller and Clark Boivin

Miller and Boivin were both on hand to collect their prizes in the youth category. Boivin was already counting the ways he could most effectively put his prize money to good use. Boivin was eager to talk about his video submission that has now afforded him some welcome financial freedom for an 11-year-old boy.

"I really wanted to learn more about North Bay and its heritage," he said. "I had a lot of fun making it and putting it together. I feel like I can show a lot more of North Bay's heritage in a 20-second video than I can in a single image."

Boivin's work featured North Bay locations that hold a special, personal place to him, including Trinity United Church and Terrace Lawn cemetery where he shared many of his family members are at rest.

“The Municipal Heritage Committee is thrilled with the response to this year’s contest. We had a very difficult time selecting the winners because we had so many great entries,” said Heritage Committee Chair Jeff Fournier. “Thanks to all those who participated.”

The contest ran from Sept. 15, 2022, until Jan. 31, 2023, and was, for the first time, open to both photo and video submissions, as well as all ages.

A new sponsorship agreement with the North Bay Society of Architects and continued support for the DIA also allowed for increased prize amounts.

Boivin said he will return to defend his (co-)title, likely in 2025 to mark North Bay's centennial year. His advice for future contest participants? "Do things that mean something to you but also have meaning to North Bay, as well."
