North Bay Mayor Al McDonald says he has been in contact with Nipissing—Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota since Wednesday's throne speech, seeking more details on the address, especially in regards to regional airports.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during the speech the Liberal government would offer "further support for industries that have been the hardest hit, including travel and tourism," and pledged "to support regional routes for airlines."

"It is unclear what the funding details are, including timelines, amount — was the funding for regional airports or airlines," advises McDonald but Rota promised he would let the Mayor know when he received those details.

In late June, Air Canada suspended service on 30 regional routes and ceased operations at eight of its regional airports, including in North Bay.

"We are encouraged that regional airports and flights were mentioned in the throne speech and appreciate the assistance of our MP," says McDonald. "We continue to encourage the federal government to support regional airports as they are critical to ensure job retention and growth for cities such as North Bay."

The City of North Bay has hundreds of businesses and public organizations that depend on air travel to be sustainable, offers McDonald,  including more than 700 direct and indirect jobs in the city related to aviation. He adds the Canadian Forces Base, Chorus, and more than 65 mining companies with local holdings depend on a viable airport and the scheduled flights that come with it.

The Mayor notes North Bay City Council has fully endorsed supporting Jack Garland Airport through the COVID-19 pandemic and had already called for federal support.

"I look forward to the details when they are released and I can provide a detailed response at that time to specifics, which I hope to hear about soon," McDonald added.
