Marathon fundraising swim going on between September 1 to 5

The swim is 28 km, without a wetsuit and without any rest, from Campbells Bay near the French River to Marathon Beach in downtown North Bay

That Lake Nipissing marathon fundraising swim is back on and will be attempted between September 1 to 5 depending on the weather.

After many months of uncertainty, postponement and cancellation, Marilyn Korzekwa says the Lake Nipissing swim is actually going to happen.

She admits it has been a challenge for her to get into shape with the pools closed due to Covid-19.

Korzekwa will be with a floatation of two boats and a few dinghies to help direct her across the lake.

The swim is 28 km, without a wetsuit and without any rest, from Campbells Bay near the French River to Marathon Beach in downtown North Bay.

The swim will take 14 hours or more to complete and is sanctioned by Solo Swims of Ontario.

If successful, it will be the second time the lake has been conquered. A previous solo swim by 23-year-old Christine Lafontaine occurred in August of 1998 to coincide with the Heritage Festival and Air show. Lafontaine was a swimmer with the North Bay Titans and Thunderbirds. The swim raised $10,000 for North Bay's planned aquatic centre.

This year, Korzekwa is raising money for the Nipissing Trackers, a local volunteer program that offers skiing lessons for special needs youth.

Korzekwa has an impressive resume.

She has done some difficult swims including Lake Ontario in1984, the English Channel in 2011, and around Manhattan in 2014.

According to Solo Swims, Korzekwa was the first Canadian to complete the Triple Crown of Marathon Swimming - The English ChannelThe Manhattan Island swim, and the Catalina Channel.

She was the first person to have completed Lake Ontario swims from both south-to-north and north-to-south on September 1-2, 1983 and August 17-18, 1984
