Local Women's March for peace, freedom, and inclusion

'We are incredibly excited to host the Women’s March again this year. As an organization that works on the front line of sexual violence, we understand the importance of marching in solidarity and unity against all acts of hate, intolerance, and violence'

For the fourth year, North Bay will march in solidarity with women and human rights groups from across the world in the annual Women’s March, Saturday January 18.

“We recognize that there is no true peace, freedom, or inclusion without equity for all. We march because there is still so much work to do to protect and advance the rights of women, vulnerable and targeted citizens in our community,” said march co-organizer Erika Lougheed.

Last year, dozens braved extreme cold weather to march.

"We march snow or shine,' says Lougheed.

The first march took place on January 21, 2017, the day after US President Donald Trump’s inauguration, as a global protest against his vulgar comments about grabbing women.

This event is accessible, open, and inclusive.

The event starts at North Bay City Hall at 9:45 a.m. with remarks from Amelia Rising Sexual Violence Support Centre.

“We are incredibly excited to host the Women’s March again this year. As an organization that works on the front line of sexual violence, we understand the importance of marching in solidarity and unity against all acts of hate, intolerance, and violence.” said Brigette Lebel, Amelia Rising executive director. “Women’s March is meant to showcase the strength our community has to offer when we embrace our neighbours, our differences, and come together to promote the common good.”

The march will follow at 10 a.m. down to and along Main Street, up Fraser Street and back to Amelia Rising at 101 Worthington Street East.

Warm drinks, snacks and additional community speakers will follow.
