The Conseil scolaire public du Nord-Est de l'Ontario (CSPNE) has much to celebrate, as many of its students have been awarded one of the highest academic honours in the land – the Governor General’s Academic Medal

This award was started by Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation. The goal was to encourage academic excellence across the nation.

Students at CSPNE certainly heeded the call, and those awarded achieved the highest grade point average within their high schools.

North Bay’s own Hayden Murphy from École secondaire publique Odyssée earned an award, as did Jonathan Marleau from École secondaire publique Nipissing Ouest in Sturgeon Falls.

Myla Johnson from École secondaire publique Renaissance, in Timmins, also received a medal. So did Kohlman Arcand from École secondaire catholique et publique l’Alliance, in Iroquois Falls, and Élissa Mayhew while attending École secondaire publique Écho du Nord, in Kapuskasing was also awarded the prestigious medal.

Since 1873, the Governor General’s Academic Medal has been awarded to just over 50,000 students – about 330 per year.

Four CSPNE students were also awarded the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Award for their dedication to community involvement.

Alia Gardiner, from École secondaire publique Nipissing Ouest, in Sturgeon Falls was honoured, as was  Jeannine Deschatelets from École secondaire publique Renaissance, in Timmins.

École secondaire catholique et publique l’Alliance student Aurora Cuddy in Iroquois Falls was recognized, as was Kaylee La Salle, from École secondaire publique Écho du Nord, in Kapuskasing.
