Local National Day of Mourning planned

'By not protecting workers the federal and provincial governments have failed us'

The North Bay & District Labour Council will join the Canadian Labour Congress in marking the National Day of Mourning for workers who have been killed, suffered injury or illness at work or because of workplace exposure.

The annual ceremony will be live-streamed from the NBDLC Facebook page starting at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28.

Henri Giroux, Labour Council President said, “In Ontario at least 35 essential workers have died because of inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE). For-profit employers, particularly in healthcare, chose to pay dividend to stockholders and give themselves big bonuses instead of making sure that their employees were safe with appropriate PPE and access to sick paid days.”

Giroux says every worker has the right to work safely.

"By not protecting workers the federal and provincial governments have failed us!” he said.

Event Coordinator, Ian Mizzi said “every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each workday. The event lets us honour those we’ve lost so we can fight for a better future.”

The North Bay & District Labour Council will be joined by Canadian Labour Council Executive Vice President Larry Rousseau.

The theme for the 2021 event is “The Human Cost of COVID-19.”
